It had aftermarket LED lights installed beneath the chassis, giving the pavement underneath it a purple glow. 01:57 The second vehicle was a silver SUV, probably a Chevrolet Tahoe, with heavily tinted windows and no front license plate. 02:05 The two vehicles kept drifting between lanes, accelerating and then slowing down, almost as if the drivers were racing each other or deliberately fooling around. 02:15 Initially, I assumed they were simply some reckless kids, possibly drunk. I reduced my speed and allowed plenty of room between us. 02:23 When you're carrying 60,000 pounds of cargo, the last thing you want is to become tangled up with irresponsible drivers. 02:31 Then they began performing a strange coordinated maneuver. They would match each other's speed almost perfectly and travel side by side, occupying both lanes for around 30 seconds. 02:42 After that, one of them would suddenly surge ahead. 02:46 My dashboard indicated that we had slowed to approximately 55 miles per hour in a 75 mile per hour zone. 02:53 There was something about the way those vehicles moved that seemed intentional, almost rehearsed. 03:00 The entire situation transformed in the span of about 10 seconds. The Tahoe abruptly accelerated and moved roughly 200 yards ahead, while the Altima remained directly in front of my truck, continuing at that same slow pace. 03:15 A moment later, the Tahoe's brake lights lit up like Christmas decorations. 03:19 The SUV swerved sharply to the left and slid sideways across both lanes. I managed to stop approximately 40 feet from the Tahoe. One of those men was holding what appeared to be a small sledgehammer. The man carrying the hammer walked with an unusual limp, as though his left leg were shorter than his right. 05:16 Despite that problem with his gait, he moved surprisingly fast. None of the men spoke. They simply carried out their rolls with a disturbing level of efficiency, as if they had done the same thing a hundred times before. 05:30 I locked the doors just as the first attacker reached the driver's side of the cab. He began striking the window with his fist. 05:37 He wasn't using the hammer yet. It seemed as though he was merely testing the strength of the glass. 05:43 Through the window, I could see his eyes behind the openings in the ski mask. They were bloodshot and wide, and I wondered whether he was under the influence of something. 05:53 Each blow caused the glass to shake in its frame. 05:56 I knew the window would not survive very long once they started using the sledgehammer. 06:01 I grabbed my phone and tried calling 911, but there was no reception in that area. 06:07 All I saw was that infuriating no service message. But I had made it through the blockade and returned to the open highway, so I kept my foot firmly pressed against the accelerator. 09:11 In the only mirror I had left, I could see the attackers running back toward their vehicles. 09:16 The limping man was moving with astonishing speed in spite of his disability. 09:21 The Altima's engine started first. Its purple underglow produced a surreal streak across the dark asphalt as the car began pursuing me. 09:29 For roughly three miles, it was just my truck and that Altima engaged in the strangest race of my life. 09:36 The sedan remained approximately 50 yards behind me, matching my speed at around 75 miles per hour. 09:43 That was pushing a fully loaded rig extremely hard on that section of highway. 09:48 Whenever the road curved, I could feel the trailer attempting to swing outward. 09:52 The cargo shifted inside, producing deep metallic groans. He was a former dock worker who had injured his leg in a forklift accident. Because of his previous job, he knew exactly which shipments were valuable enough to target. 12:10 The police captured three of the four attackers that night. One of the men who had emerged from the Altima and another attacker surrendered relatively quickly after spike strip shredded the car's tires. 12:21 The limping ringleader, however, somehow disappeared into the desert. 12:26 Officers located the Tahoe abandoned around two miles from the place where the attack had occurred. The SUV still had paint from my truck smeared across its bumper. 12:35 All three men who were arrested belonged to the same Bakersfield-based crew. 12:40 Each of them already had a criminal record involving armed robbery and interstate cargo theft. 12:45 During the investigation, the authorities discovered an entire notebook inside the Altima. 12:51 It contained detailed information about trucking routes, delivery schedules, and even the names and regular habits of individual drivers. 13:00 My particular run had been marked with a red star. The company also changed its procedures. 14:33 High-value electronic shipments are now handled only by teams of drivers, and the routes are altered randomly. 14:39 Glenn Howard, the warehouse supervisor, received a seven-year federal prison sentence for his involvement. 14:46 The three men arrested on the night of the attack were each sentenced to between 15 and 20 years for armed robbery and conspiracy. 14:53 The limping man, though, remains somewhere out there. 14:56 Knowing that keeps me alert during every trip. They are using many of the same tactics, except some of them now use motorcycles instead of cars. 16:28 So yes, I continue driving at night, and I still transport valuable shipments. 16:33 The difference is that I now watch every vehicle and every person as though my life depends on it, because the truth is, it actually might. 16:46 Story two. 16:48 I've been driving 18-wheelers for nearly seven years, and the solitude of the job had never truly troubled me. 16:55 At least, not until that night in late November 2022. 16:59 Most people consider long-haul trucking a profession dominated by men. And they aren't exactly mistaken. 17:06 As a 34-year-old woman transporting freight across the country, I'm unquestionably part of a small minority. 17:13 That night I was completing a routine trip from Denver to Kansas City. My trailer was loaded with furniture that had to be delivered by the following morning. 17:22 The weather had been relatively cooperative. It was cold and dry, but there was no snow or ice storm slowing me down, and I had been making excellent time on Interstate 70. 17:32 At around 2 am, however, my body began insisting that I stop for a break. 17:37 I had already driven beyond the place where I normally would have rested because I was determined to remain on schedule. 17:44 By then, my eyelids were becoming heavy, and my lower back was aching from spending hours in the same seated position. 17:50 There was a small rest area approximately 40 miles east of Colby that I had visited on previous trips. It wasn't anything impressive, just a modest parking lot, a restroom building, a couple of vending machines and one of those ancient coffee dispensers that probably hadn't received a proper cleaning since the Reagan administration. 18:10 The rest area was almost deserted when I arrived, although that wasn't unusual at that hour. 18:16 An old Peterbilt was parked at the far end of the lot with all its lights turned off. I assumed another driver was sleeping inside. 18:23 There was also a battered sedan sitting close to the restroom building. 18:28 I parked my freightliner nearer to the building than I ordinarily would have. The overhead light beside the entrance kept flickering, casting strange shifting shadows across the parking lot and making the entire place resemble a scene from a cheap horror movie. 18:42 Before leaving the cab, I grabbed my jacket and phone and checked that my pocket knife was securely clipped to my jeans. That was simply standard procedure for a woman traveling alone in the middle of the night. 18:54 The cold struck me the instant I climbed down from the trunk. 18:57 It was that sharp wind from the planes that cuts directly through your clothing, regardless of how many layers you have on. 19:05 I began by making a quick inspection of my rig. The machine made several noises that did not inspire confidence before finally dispensing a liquid that only vaguely resembled coffee. 20:10 It tasted like a mixture of scorched rubber and battery acid. 20:14 Nevertheless, it was warm and contained caffeine, which was all I needed to get through the remaining portion of my route. 20:21 I stayed there for a minute, stretching my legs and taking small sips of that horrible coffee, while looking through the glass doors at my truck beneath the flickering light. 20:31 The beat-up sedan I had noticed when I arrived was still parked nearby. This time, however, I could see someone seated behind the steering wheel. The person was little more than a dark silhouette visible through the windshield. 20:43 Something about the figure's posture unsettled me. Whoever it was remained unnaturally still and seemed completely focused on the entrance to the building. 20:52 Truck drivers encounter all kinds of strange people and situations at rest areas, though, and I had taught myself not to become frightened by every minor detail. 21:01 I dismissed the feeling, tossed my half-empty cup into the trash, and pushed open the doors. 21:07 As I stepped outside, I was already calculating how many hours of driving remained and whether I would need to make another stop before reaching Kansas City. 21:16 The cold air felt refreshing after the stale atmosphere inside the restroom building. 21:21 I took a deep breath and prepared to return to the road. 21:24 That was when I heard an engine start. The sound wasn't coming from the sedan. It belonged to something larger. 21:31 A white van that I hadn't noticed earlier was parked on the opposite side of the building. It had been concealed in the shadows beyond the reach of the overhead lights. 21:40 At first, the van rolled forward slowly, as though its driver were merely leaving the rest area. Then its headlight swung in my direction and the engine suddenly revved. 21:50 The vehicle raced across the parking lot, its tires squealing against the freezing pavement. 21:56 It stopped violently between me and my trunk, no more than fifteen feet from where I stood. 22:02 The sliding side door had already begun opening before the van came to a complete stop. 22:07 Two men jumped out. The first was tall and thin, wearing a faded denim jacket. The second man was shorter but powerfully built, with the body of a football linebacker and a black hoodie covering his upper body. 22:21 They spread apart with obvious purpose, positioning themselves to block whichever direction I might attempt to run. 22:28 Their movements suggested experience. It looked as if they had done this before. 22:33 The tall man immediately reached toward me. 22:36 A baseball cap partly concealed his face, but I could see his lips moving. 22:41 He was saying something, although I couldn't hear a word over the sound of blood pounding inside my ears. 22:47 Every self-defense course I had ever attended, every warning my mother had given me about traveling alone, and every terrifying story I'd heard from other women in the trucking industry came together in that single instant. 23:00 I didn't scream. I didn't waste valuable time attempting to negotiate with them. 23:05 Instead, I pivoted sharply to the left and used the force of the movement to drive my elbow into the tall man's ribs as he lunged at me. 23:13 He let out a grunt and staggered backward, creating just enough room for me to move. 23:18 The shorter man, however, was much faster than his heavy build suggested. His thick fingers closed around the sleeve of my jacket and he jerked me backward with enough strength to almost pull me off my feet. 23:30 I could smell cigarettes on him. along with something sour that reminded me of stale beer and sweat. 23:37 Acting entirely on instinct, I brought the heel of my boot down as hard as possible on the top of his foot. 23:44 At the same time, I twisted my body and tore my arm free, leaving my jacket clutched in his hand. 23:50 Their brief moment of confusion gave me a tiny opportunity, and I took full advantage of it. 23:56 I sprinted toward my truck, struggling to maintain my footing as my boots slid across patches of frost on the pavement. 24:03 Behind me, I heard the men shouting curses and their footsteps striking the asphalt. The tall man had already recovered and was closing the distance between us. 24:13 His long legs allowed him to gain ground frighteningly quickly. 24:17 My truck appeared impossibly far away. The fingers closed around a handful of fabric and pulled. 24:52 I spun around and used the momentum to throw a wild punch. My fists connected with someone, probably the tall man somewhere around the face. 25:01 I heard him curse, and his grip relaxed just enough for me to pull away and seize the door handle. 25:07 I hauled myself into the cab with strength I never knew I possessed. 25:11 At that point, every muscle in my body was operating on pure adrenaline. 25:15 The shorter man had moved around the front of the truck and was attempting to climb onto the passenger side. 25:21 His large fists hammered against the window. 25:24 Meanwhile, the tall man grabbed at my leg as I tried to drag it into the cab. 25:28 I kicked backward with all the force I could summon. 25:32 My boot struck something solid, possibly his shoulder or chest. 25:36 I yanked my leg inside and slammed the door with such force that the entire cab shook. 25:41 The automatic locks engaged with a firm mechanical thud. 25:45 At that moment it was the most comforting sound I had ever heard. 25:49 Both men were now standing beside my door. The tall man pressed his face against the glass, his breath creating a patch of fog on the window while he shouted things that made my stomach twist. 26:00 The shorter man repeatedly pulled on the door handle, almost as if he believed it would magically open if he continued trying long enough. 26:08 Their white van remained behind them with its engine running. Exhausts drifted visibly through the freezing air and the sliding side door was still open, resembling a mouth waiting to swallow someone. 26:20 My hands were shaking so violently that I could barely control them. But I managed to retrieve my phone and dial 911 while simultaneously starting the truck's engine. 26:30 The dispatcher's voice was controlled and professional. She asked me to provide my location, and I forced myself to answer clearly, even though every instinct in my body was screaming at me to drive away immediately. 26:42 The two men continued circling my truck like wolves surrounding wounded prey. 26:47 The tall man pulled a narrow object from his pocket. 26:51 It appeared to be a Slim Jim or some other lock manipulation tool. 26:55 He began forcing it into the space around my door frame while his partner watched the surroundings. I read the mile marker I had memorized from the entrance to the rest area and described the men, their clothing, and the white van while struggling to keep my voice from breaking. 27:14 She assured me that officers were already responding and that a state trooper was less than 10 minutes away. 27:20 Under normal circumstances, 10 minutes doesn't sound like much. But when someone is actively attempting to break into your trunk, it feels like an eternity. 27:30 I shifted the transmission into gear, fully prepared to run them over if that became my only option. 27:36 Then I noticed something that made the situation even more terrifying. 27:41 The sedan I had seen earlier, the one containing the person who had been watching the restroom entrance, had moved behind my trailer and was blocking me in. 27:50 Its driver was now standing outside. I couldn't tell whether he intended to retrieve a weapon or had simply decided that abducting me was no longer worth the trouble. 29:38 I continued sounding the horn in short, deliberate sequences.
